All of that Nonsense

Reading is one of my biggest passions and it has always been something that I turned to for enjoyment, understanding, comfort, and escape. I enjoy reading young adult and urban fantasy books, but I will jump to other genres if I hear if something is really great.
Fever Moon: The Fear Dorcha - Karen Marie Moning, Al Rio, David Lawrence, Cliff Richards Honestly, I enjoyed the story but this isnt what I thought the characters looked like at all. I think they made Mac WAY too sexual. I get that she is supposed to be pretty, and turns Barrons on, but a porn star? I dont think so. Anyway, I liked it, and will probably buy more if they continue with it, I just wasnt happy with the way the characters were visualized.

Jacob (The Nightwalkers, Book 1)

Jacob - Jacquelyn Frank It was alright, I think I liked it more towards the beginning. It got really predictable towards the end, and I was frustrated with Isabella when her powers started to develop. For a smart girl, she took a long time to figure anything out.
Mustache! - Mac Barnett, Kevin Cornell A story about a kingdom ruled by an arrogant king, who doesnt solve any of the problems within his town because he is too obsessed with himself. It is a cute story, but it doesnt have any real resolution. The town is still suffering at the end, and they are still ruled by the arrogant king.
Oh No!: Or How My Science Project Destroyed the World - Mac Barnett, Dan Santat A cute story about a girl who builds a giant robot for the science fair, who ends up ravaging the city. As a result she goes through a list of the thing she should have added to the robot.
Are You Awake? - Sophie Blackall Cute story about a child that wakes up in the middle of the night, and has a ton of questions for his mom through the course of the night.
Shi-shi-etko - Nicola I. Campbell, Kim LaFave A picture book following a Native American girl as her parents, and grandparents teach the importance of nature and her surroundings to her. In different scenes she takes in the different visual stimulation that she is receiving from nature.
Doodle Dandies: Poems That Take Shape - J. Patrick Lewis, Lisa Desimini Fun read for kids of all ages. The poems throughout the book take shape, and readers are allowed to have two forms of imagery, one from the words, and one from the actual pictures that form.
The True Meaning of Smekday - Adam Rex Listened to the audio book. I had a great time listening to this book, even though this isnt the type of book I would normally seek out to listen to. I was glad to hear the reader get so into the characters, and was able to really imagine Tip reading her paper to me, or JLo speaking.
Teedie: The Story of Young Teddy Roosevelt - Don Brown Fun and unique way of telling the life of President Theodore Roosevelt. As it mentions in the title, it spends a lot of time focuses on the youth of Teddy, and I think a lot of kids will find this part of his life interesting. It has great pictures, and a fun way of displaying the text.
The Story Of Ruby Bridges - Robert Coles, George Ford This is an educational read for read for kids wanting to learn more about this time in history. It has great pictures, and not an overwhelming amount of text, so it would be good to read to a group of younger kids, while teaching them something about history. I just wished it had focused more on the integration of white students back into school instead of just mentioning it at the end.
Polar Bears - Norbert Rosing The organization of this book is good for readers looking for a quick guide for information on polar bears, but it felt too much like a textbook for me. It seemed that Rosing wanted this to be a book focuses on his photographs more than the information about the polar bear.
Polar Bears - Mark Newman I enjoyed reading this quick, and informational read about the polar bears. Newman makes comparisons throughout the book that make it easy to understand for young readers.
We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball - Kadir Nelson I would have to say this book would have to be for children with a higher reading level, and enjoy reading. It has big blocks of text that can easily make readers bored. It has a good story telling element with the narrator telling you the story like you are actually listening to a person tell you their life history. It has stunning artwork that really add to the history. Overall, it was a difficult book to read for too long because of the big text, but it was a good book to learn more about the Negro Baseball League.
Amulet, Vol. 1: The Stonekeeper - Kazu Kibuishi This was a fun, action filled graphic novel for kids that left me wanting to pick up the next one in the series. It has great pictures, and a story line that will keep readers of all ages interested. The story focuses on Emily and her brother Navin who discover an alternate dimension when their mother gets kidnapped. Emily discovers a magical stone which she must learn to control its magical capabilities in order to find her mother, and stand up against the evil forces within this other dimension.
Jabberwocky - Lewis Carroll, Christopher Myers An interesting take on the poem by Lewis Carroll. It is a fast read, but I still found myself a little confused with the words, and some of the pictures.
The Storm in the Barn - Matt Phelan Winner of the Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction award. Graphic novel telling the tale of a boy and his family during 1937 in Kansas during the Dust Bowl. Phelan tells in the author notes that he wanted to create a story about the life in the dust bowl through the eyes of a child. This is a great tale of a boy who finds a Rain King in an old barn and must make the king go back to the sky to save his family's farmland.
